9-Year-Old Boy's Condition Improving After Being Hit by Pickup in Accident That Killed His Mom: PD

A 9-year-old boy is on the mend in the hospital after a vehicle struck him and killed his mom in Bridgeport on Monday. 

He was crossing John Street with his mother, Carmen Martinez, 41 of Bridgeport, at 3:30 p.m. when a pickup struck them. 

His mother was pronounced dead at St. Vincent's Medical Center and the boy was transported to Bridgeport Hospital and then transferred to Yale-New Haven Hospital in critical condition.

Police said the boy's condition has improved to serious and that he's in stable condition. 

Police said the driver of a GMC pickup truck is cooperating with the investigation. He's been identified as a 70-year-old man from Berkley, Massachusetts. 

No arrests have been made.
