Car Thief Is Busy in Ansonia

A car thief has been targeting older model Honda Civics in Ansonia.

Police in Ansonia are looking for a busy car thief with particular taste for Honda Civics.

Nearly two dozen cars have been stolen in the Wakelee Avenue area in the last two weeks, and about half of them have been Honda Civics.

Older model Honda Civics have been dumped on the side of the road recently and the ignitions have been ripped apart.

Police said the same person is linked to all of the crimes.

“This is the maddest I’ve ever been in my entire life,” said John Rodriguez, who was one of nearly two dozen people whose car was stolen near Wakelee Avenue. “He got in my car and he just took off. He saw me coming and tore out of the driveway.”

Like many of the victims, Rodriguez was parked along the street.

He walked into a friend’s home the other day and said he watched the car get swiped from the front window.

“I ran out. There was nothing I could do. He was already down the street,” Rodriguez added.

Ansonia Police said the recent car thefts have been unique.

The car thief isn’t stealing them for parts, he’s been using them as a means of transportation.

Investigators have found many of the stolen cars in Ansonia, Hamden, Bridgeport and New Haven.

The thief ditched them after he made it to his final destination.

Rodriguez wants to know where his car was left, because it hasn’t been easy for him to get around without it.

“I have no idea. It might be in New Haven for all I know,” Rodriguez said.

Police said many victims made themselves an easy target by keeping their doors unlocked and the keys in the car.

They have urged the public to lock up and be especially careful, especially since they haven’t tracked down whoever’s responsible.
