James Galante’s actions to get to the top of the trash hauling industry cost him his freedom and could next cost him his millions.
Attorney General Richard Blumenthal and Consumer Protection Commissioner Jerry Farrell say Galante violated fair trade and antitrust laws by inflating contracts and they want Galante to pay restitution to contract holders, including Yale University.
Blumenthal filed a suit Tuesday in Hartford Superior Court claiming the imprisoned trash-hauling magnate swindled consumers out of millions of dollars.
Galante was among dozens arrested in a 2006 probe of the region's trash hauling industry. His regional trash empire included Automated Waste Disposal, Inc., Thomas Refuse Service, American Disposal Services of CT, Transfer Systems Inc. and Greensphere Inc.
He pleaded guilty to racketeering and conspiracy, and is serving an 87-month federal prison sentence.
A message was left Tuesday for his attorney.
