Police officers conducting a DUI checkpoint in West Hartford early Friday nabbed an alleged drunk driver after he plowed into one of the police cruisers at the checkpoint.

A 2001 Chevy Cavalier driven by Jose Albino, 28, of Hartford hit the cruiser on New Britain Avenue just past midnight, according to police.

After hitting the crusier, police said Albino put his car in reverse and tried to take off.

Officers were able to stop the car, but Albino would not get out, police said.

Police said Albino appeared intoxicated. They had to cut the seat belt and forcibly remove Albino from the car. Two officers were injured during the altercation.

Albino faces charges of evading responsibility, reckless driving, failure to drive to the right, operating a motor vehicle without a license and interfering with an officer. An investigation into possible DUI charges continues, according to police.
