A Plainfield animal control officer who fell to the ground last week while responding to a call about an out-of-control pit bull died on Thursday.

On Monday, animal control officers from across Connecticut will gathering to remember their colleague, Theresa Foss, 47.

Foss, 47, died at Yale-New Haven Hospital. The death was not the result of the incident on Sept. 29, according to Charles Gagne, of Gagne Piechowski Funeral Home in Jewett City. It is still not clear how she fell.

Foss had responded to a home on Green Hollow Road after a report that an aggressive pit bull trapped a family inside their home.

At the time, Police Chief Robert Hoffman said Foss sustained a head injury when she was knocked down. Hoffman said Foss was standing next to her vehicle and it’s not known whether she hit her head on the ground or on the vehicle. The dog did not bite Foss, Hoffman told the Norwich Bulletin .

The dog's owner, David Coombs said he killed the dog and buried it in Canterbury when he realized it was his dog that had been involved in the incident.

Foss had been at Yale-New Haven since the incident, but hospital officials are not offering any more details about her health at the time of her death.

Plainfield police released a statement Thursday, reporting Foss’ death “with great sadness.”

Calling hours for Foss will be Monday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Gagne-Piechowski Funeral Home in Lisbon. Her funeral is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Lighthouse Church of God in Plainfield.

Karen Jones, a spokeswoman for the Connecticut Municipal Animal Control Officers Association, says Foss is believed to be the first animal control officer in Connecticut to die in the line of duty.
