Cigarette Might Have Sparked Terryville Fire

A cigarette might have sparked the fire that destroyed a house in Terryville late Monday night.

Four adults and a 2-week-old baby were home when fire broke out on the back porch of 34 Prospect Street just after 11:30 p.m. on Monday and spread to the attic, according to officials.

The home had working smoke detectors and everyone made it out safely, but an animal might have been lost, according to officials.

The preliminary investigation revealed that a cigarette that was not extinguished might have caused the fire.

The fire caused significant damage to the second floor, the house has been condemned and the residents will be staying with relatives, officials said.

The Thomaston Fire Department helped cover the Terryville fire house while firefighters battled the fire.
The fire was under control as of 12:15 a.m. and the scene was clearing just after 2 a.m.

No firefighters were injured.
