Ansonia Police Dog Thor Retires

An Ansonia K9 is retiring due to a medical issue.

Police dog Thor has served Ansonia for more than nine years, according to a press release.

Thor graduated from the RENBAR Kennels Police Canine Academy in April 2005 with his handler Officer Steve Martins and the two have worked together ever since.

Thor has responded to 10,000 calls and police officers have utilized him on 442 motor vehicle stops since 2010.

Thor and Martins have helped federal, state and local law enforcement agencies on 240 cases and have done security walk-throughs at more than 30 schools, police said.

The K9 unit has also appeared at several meet and greets arranged with local students and community groups.

A ceremony honoring Thor is scheduled for 2 p.m. on  Monday at the Aldermanic Chambers on Ansonia City Hall's second floor. The public is invited to attend.
