A 54-year-old Hartford man accused of stealing $234 worth of chewing gum from  the Target store on Buckland Hills Drive in South Windsor was arrested yesterday.

Police went to the store on Tuesday to investigate a report of shoplifting and said Barry Gholson, of 15 New Donald Street in Hartford, concealed the gum in a duffel bag and tried to leave without paying for it.

In addition to the gum, Gholson had a syringe used to inject heroin, police said.

Gholson was charged with larceny in the sixth degree and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was released on a $500 surety bond and is scheduled to appear at Manchester Superior Court on Sept. 13.
