Authorities are searching for a Middletown mother and son who did not return from a fishing trip off Block Island, according to NBC affiliate WJAR.
According to the US Coast Guard, 54-year-old Linda Carmen and her 22-year-old son Nathan haven't been heard from since Saturday, when they left from Point Judith, Rhode Island for an off-shore fishing trip.
Friends reported the pair missing around 6:30 p.m. Sunday when they did not return home.
Sharon Hartstein of Rocky Hill has known Linda Carmen for over 20 years and said the mother and son often go on fishing adventures.
"They like to go off the beaten track and see some of the nature."
Hartstein said Linda told her they'd be back around 9 a.m. Sunday, but so far no one has heard from them. Hartstein said Linda is not the type to disappear without warning and she's worried for her friend's safety.
"Frustrating, frustrating. I could you know go take a walk and look for somebody, join a search if somebody was missing locally… I can't do that on the water," she said.

The Coast Guard said the pair was traveling in a 32-foot aluminum center console boat.
The Coast Guard and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management are both involved in the search.
