A Middletown baby was fighting for his life Thursday evening. His own father was accused of assaulting him.

Zachary Salyers, 20, of 280 South Main Street in Middletown has been charged with first degree assault and risk of injury to a minor.

Middletown police arrested Salyers Tuesday after he admitted shaking his five-month-old son when the boy wouldn't stop crying, according to court papers. The incident happened inside their Middletown apartment Tuesday morning. Due to his extensive injuries, doctors told police they believe the infant was also beaten.

The child was being treated at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center with a fractured skull, two broken ribs, bleeding and swelling of the brain, and other injuries, according to the court papers. The baby is in Department of Children and Families custody.

Salyers was held on $250,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled April 21.
