The Hartford HealthCare Corporation and the parent company of William W. Backus Hospital have begun the process of affiliating.

The plan is for Backus Corporation to become a member of the Hartford HealthCare Corporation and for both organizations to share staffs and physicians, and give patients easier access to a wider range of services and treatments.

The Hartford HealthCare network includes Hartford Hospital, the Hospital of Central Connecticut, MidState Medical Center, Natchaug Hospital and Windham Hospital.

Backus Corporation is the parent of the Backus Health System, which includes The William W. Backus Hospital, Backus Health Care, Backus Home Health Care, Backus Physician Services, Community Medical Partners, CONNCare and the WWB Corporation.

The board of directors for Backus has been reviewing opportunities for strategic alignment for more than a year, according to a news release from the two organizations.

Boards for both organizations must approve the affiliation and that process could take several months. This process also requires state and federal regulatory approvals.

Board Chairman Peter Disch said the goal of the process is to position Backus to meet the healthcare needs of the community, in the midst of a rapidly changing healthcare landscape.

If the move is approved, Backus would remain a not-for profit hospital, according to both organizations.
