A bear died after being struck by a car on Interstate 91 north in Windsor on Tuesday night.

The bear was struck just in the area of exits 39 and 41 just after 9 p.m., according to state police.

Police said the bear came out of a line of woods on the right side of the highway and Elizabeth Ciotti, 52, of Granby, was driving in the right lane and struck the animal.

Ciotti was not injured, according to police.

The bear was dead when police responded.

There have been 1,685 reports of black bears in the state in the last year, 26 of which were in Windsor.
