Route 15 South, the Berlin Turnpike, was closed at Route 287 in Newington for several hours after of a crash.

Police said a police officer was slowing his cruiser to stop behind the stopped tractor-trailer when he looked in his rear view mirror and saw another car approaching at a high rate of speed.

The officer began moving his cruiser to the right lane, out of the way of the approaching Honda Civic, but the car hit the police car on the left side rear and then hit the back of the tractor trailer, police said.

The officer was transported to an area hospital to be treated for minor injuries. The Newington Volunteer Fire Department pulled the Honda Civic driver from the car and the driver was transported to the hospital.  The tractor trailer operator was not injured.

The road reopened at 7:25 a.m.

Newington police are investigating and ask any witnesses to call Officer Ryan Deane at 860-594-6204, reference case #I20122859.
