Memorial Day traditionally means big sales on clothing, appliances and everything in between, but you don't have to wait until the end of the month to start saving.
May is the best time to buy a mattress because it kicks off the busy bedding season.
Retailers will slash prices to get older models off the sales floor, making room for new products. People are also more likely to move during the summer and a new home often means new furniture.
Gold Bond mattress president Robert Naboicheck says customers should expect to pay $899 to $999 for a quality queen mattress set. But during the month of May, that set could cost you a lot less.
Consumers can find mattresses between 50 and 70 percent off in May, according to DealNews.
Naboicheck tells his customers not to focus too much on price and suggests thinking of a mattress as an investment in your health and quality of life.
"What's important is the quality of the material, the credibility of the retailer and the comfort level that you need that's appropriate for you," Naboicheck said. "A promotional $99 twin that you see advertised really isn't an appropriate product for a child or anyone and it doesn't have a life expectancy more than a year or two. So invest a few more dollars for something that's going to perform better long-term."

The average life-expectancy of a new mattress is seven to eight years.
“There's lots of different options and there's no one right mattress for anyone," Naboicheck said.
May is also a good time to buy paint and wood stains as you prep for your summer projects. Stores will offer discounts and deals due to high demand. And just like buying a mattress, experts we spoke to says quality matters.
"You don't want to buy something cheap. It's not about going and buying a cheap gallon of paint," said Joseph Scarpantonio, owner of Shop-Rite Hardware and paint supply in Wethersfield.
Scarpantonio recommends looking for deals on name brands rather than trying a less-expensive brand you’re not familiar with.
"Sometimes you get what you're paying for, and in paint, if you're providing the labor and doing the project, you may as well go a tiny bit more and make it work well," he said.
