Blame It On The Rain, Again

Several streets were flooded in Southeastern Connecticut on Thursday.
It was a wet and wild Thursday for many cities and towns across Connecticut. In some places, nearly a month’s worth of rain fell in minutes during the storm and the rain could still be coming on Friday. There is a chance of thunderstorms.
Thursday, the city of Waterbury lived up to its name.
Water rushed down many roads, making it impossible for drivers to get from point A to point B. Harper Avenue looked more like a small river than an avenue and water lifted chunks of asphalt from the road and caused a few problems on Route 69.
“There were cars stuck on the street. The only cars you saw were SUVs. If they didn’t have four-wheel drive, they weren’t making it out,” said Porsha Lopes, of Waterbury.
“The asphalt is everywhere. It looks like a waterfall coming down the street,” said Omunique Owens of Waterbury.
Up the road in Wolcott, it was much of the same.
Creeks and banks overflowed. On Rogers Road, part of a driveway gave way, exposing part of a curtain that was installed to prevent any kind of flooding.
“The next thing I knew, a 40-foot PVC pipe came flying out. There’s probably about five or six tons of rubble here. The whole street is blocked for 150 feet,” said Dennis Desaulniers, of Wolcott.
In many places, the water receded as quickly as it rushed in. Even so, Thursday’s storm left its mark on many roads and the residents who live on them.
“I’ve lived here 22 years and I’ve never seen so much rain,” said Desaulneirs.
