2 Arrested While Blaze Damages Home

A heated argument after the fire led to the arrests of two people.

Old Saybrook police and fire officials are investigating a fire that heavily damaged a home and sent two people away in handcuffs on Saturday.

The fire was called in around 4 p.m. and when personnel arrived to the home at 81 Ferry Road, it was fully engulfed, according to officials.

A heated argument erupted when family members arrived at the scene, which led to the arrests of Elizabeth Colognhi, a 41-year-old occupant of the home, and the brother of her estranged husband, Todd Colonghi, 40, of 174 Beach Park Road in Clinton, Police Lt. Kevin Roche said.

Both were charged with breach of peace.

Elizabeth Colonghi was also charged with interfering with an officer and criminal mischief. She is being held on a $10,000 bond and will be appear in court on Nov. 29.

A search warrant was obtained when detectives and fire marshals at the scene concluded there was sufficient cause to collect potential evidence to help determine the cause of the fire, Lt. Roche said.

Investigators were still at the scene as of 8 a.m. Sunday morning.
