Extra Police at Southington High After Bomb Threat

Southington High School students will find extra police on patrol on Tuesday morning, a day after a bomb threat led to the school being evacuate.

Students were dismissed early from Southington High School after a bomb threat was discovered around 1:30 p.m. on Monday on the app "Yik Yak," which allows users to post anonymous messages visible to all other users in the immediate area.

According to police the message, posted around 8:30 a.m. on Monday, threatened to set off bombs on Monday and half the day on Tuesday. 

The school building was evacuated and all after-school activities were canceled as police and fire officials arrived to investigate.

No explosives were found during the search. At one point, a bag considered suspicious was found in the Agricultural Science building in room A106, but it just contained clothing .

Authorities said custodial staff remained at the school overnight and the half-day will go on as planned on Tuesday.

School administrators sent a letter to parents notifying them of the incident.

"Buses were already arriving on campus for regular dismissal and therefore administration used the opportunity to dismiss the students at that time," Supt. Tim Connellan wrote in the email to parents and guardians. "Students staying for extra curricular activities are safe and are being supervised by staff members."

According to Connellan, extra police will patrol the area as a precaution.
