Murder Suspect Shot Two Brothers, Killing One: Bridgeport Police

A Bridgeport man is facing murder charges after shooting two brothers early Sunday morning and killing one of them.

Police arrested Efrain Rivera, of 723 Ogden Street, after brothers Miguel and Jose Martinez, of Bridgeport, confronted him at his home about reported threats he made against them, police said. There was an altercation between them while the brothers were at Rivera's home at about 1 a.m. on Sunday, so he shot both of them, police said.

An ambulance took Miguel Rivera, 34, to Bridgeport Hospital, where he later died. Jose Martinez, 32, was transported to Saint Vincent's Hospital with injuries and is expected to survive, police said.

Police arrested Rivera on charges of murder, criminal attempt at murder and first-degree assault and he confessed to shooting the brothers.

“Thanks to the prompt attention of both our patrol unit and our detective bureau, we were able to quickly apprehend the suspect,” Bridgeport Assistant Chief James Nardozzi said. “This is a tragic result from a personal dispute.”

He was held in police custody in lieu of a $1 million bond.

Bridgeport police aid that despite the recent shooting, violence and property crime are reducing overall in the city. There was a 3.6 percent decrease in violent crime and a 4.9 percent plunge in property crime in 2014 in comparison to the previous year, according to the FBI's Uniform Crime Report statistics, Bridgeport police said.

"In all, violent crime in Bridgeport is down by 30 percent since 2001," Bridgeport police said in a news release. "And, so far in 2015, violent crime has gone down by almost 16 percent compared to the first three months of 2014."
