Budget problems are forcing the Bristol school district to close one of its schools after this year.
Last night, the board of education members voted, 8-1, to close the Jennings School in June to save about $500,000 in the upcoming budget year.
“I’ve been at this school my whole life. I love this school,” Alyssa Masi, a fourth grade student, said.
The principal warned in a newsletter last month that the school could close.
“My son goes here and I went here. It’s sentimental -- same hardwood floors were here when I was a kid, same blackboards are here, sad to see it close,” Joe Vanasse said.
The closure is just one of several changes as the school district reorganizes.
Two new schools will open, three other elementary schools will close and music programs at the district's middle schools will be trimmed.
