Budget Cuts Forces Child Support Fees to Rise

Connecticut stops paying federal fee and parents will pay more.

Add it to the list of budget cuts. Connecticut is no longer paying a $430,000 federal fee to cover costs tied to child support payments and more than 22,000 custodial parents who will now be subjected to the fee.

Officials from the State Department of Social Services said the fee helped cover expenses associated with locating parents, establishing paternity and enforcing child support judgments.

Now parents receiving more than $510 in child support in a year will have to pay $10 to make up for the fee and those receiving more than $525 will have to pay $25.

Notices have been sent to parents who will have to pay the fee.
