Greenwich has been the destination for people on a quest for big Powerball jackpots and now the town is seeing a boom in interest for same-sex marriages.
The town started becoming a popular place for gay weddings around Nov. 12, when the first licenses were issued to same-sex couples after a decision by the Supreme Court. Couples from New York, and as far away as Texas, Nevada, Colorado and California have come to Greenwich to wed, according to Greenwich Time.
Jon and Robert Cooper recently drove up from their home in Lloyd Harbor, N.Y., on Long Island's north shore, and were married among the tulips in Binney Park, the newspaper reports.
"I wish it was New York state, but it's the next best thing," Jon Cooper, 54, who is the Democratic majority leader of the Suffolk County Legislature, told Greenwich Time.
All 69 of the same-sex couples who were issued marriage licenses since the beginning of the year were from out of state, according to the town's vital records registrar.
Of the 122 same-sex couples married in Greenwich since November, only 14 of them were Connecticut residents.
Stamford is also hosting dozens of gay marriages. The city has issued 71 marriage licenses to same-sex couples from out of state since November.
