Car Catches Fire on I-95 Northbound

A car went up in flames this evening on Interstate 95 northbound in Westport.

Fairfield and Westport fire officials responded to the area of exit 19 on I-95 northbound after a car caught fire at 7:22 p.m. Thursday. The car had pulled over onto the right-hand shoulder, authorities said.

The vehicle's front end and engine were destroyed. The passenger compartment received heavy smoke and water damage, fire officials said.

No injuries were reported, and no other vehicles were involved, authorities said.

According to state police, traffic was backed up on I-95 northbound for an extended period of time as a result of the fire.

Westport fire officials said the scene was cleared at 7:54 p.m.
