Car Hits Waterbury Store

A car hit the BJ's Wholesale Club on Reidville Drive in Waterbury on Tuesday morning and the driver was taken to Waterbury Hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

Police said a 40-year-old woman was driving a gray 2007 Ford Edge when it suddenly accelerated around 9:30 a.m.

She told police she could not stop the vehicle and it drove into the side of the BJ’s building at 344 Reidville Drive, went through the brick wall and ran through a cage where electronics are kept.

The woman's mother-in-law said the accelerator jammed, causing the SUV to speed out of control.

Police said the building sustained significant damage, but the structural integrity was not compromised and the business remains open.

Police are investigating the cause of the crash, including the possibility that a mechanical problem caused the crash.
