A man who called himself the Devil beat up a cop after the car he and another man were traveling in slammed into a Southington hospital Friday morning, taking out the front doors, police said.

Police responded to the Hospital of Central Connecticut in Southington just before 3 a.m. after someone called to report that someone was driving erratically in the parking lot. Police believe two men and a dog were in the four-door Chevrolet.

The erratic driving seems to have ended abruptly when the driver crashed into the hospital.

Both men and the dog fled, police said. Police caught up with Matthew Dufresne, 31, of Bristol, from there, the situation got stranger.

The suspect attacked the Officer David Carbone, punched him, and at one point started to scream that he was the Devil, police said.

Carbone, who was also bitten by the dog, was treated for minor injuries.

Carbone shot him with a stun gun, police said. Dufresne was charged with two counts of assaulting an officer, reckless endangerment, criminal mischief  and interfering with an officer.

Police also found the second man, who  is now at the police department.
