Gas Station Crash Sparks Explosion

The crash sparked a fire at the Sunoco station.

A car slammed into a gas pump at a gas station in Ellington, sparking an explosion and fire Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened around 3:30 p.m. at the Sunoco at 194 Windsorville Road, as a woman backed her car into one of the pumps, according to fire officials.

An employee at the Cumberland Farms across the street said the flames climbed up to the canopy over the gas pumps.

The driver and two other people got out of their cars to escape the flames, and an employee working inside the convenience store shut down power immediately.

"All the safety equipment on the pump worked as it was supposed to," Fire Chief Vince Gambacorta said.

The area around the gas station was evacuated for a short time as fire officials made sure there was no threat for a larger explosion.
