Ceremony Planned for Charles. W Morgan Ship

The restoration of the Charles W. Morgan whaling ship is moving ahead this week with the stepping of its masts.

Coins will be placed under each of the ship's three masts at a ceremony Thursday in a tradition that is believed to bring good luck to the ship and its crew.

The coins are from 1841, 1941, and 2013 to represent the ship's original launch, its arrival to Mystic Seaport and its current restoration.

Mystic Seaport has been restoring the 172-year-old wooden ship, preparing it to sail across New England next summer. The Morgan's last voyage ended in 1921 and it is the world's only surviving wooden whaling ship.
