Mom Visits Boyfriend in Florida, Leaves Child in Killingly

A Florida vacation has landed a Killingly woman behind bars. That's because Michelle Kasseris, 33, went there to visit her boyfriend and left her 11-year-old daughter home alone while she was away, according to state police.

A school resource officer began an investigation into unexplained absences by the 11-year-old last week and found the child home at the Carol Avenue home on Wednesday without supervision, police said.

The trooper contacted Kasseris by phone. At first, she said she was in Florida for a death in the family, had not made arrangements for anyone to watch her daughter, and wouldn't return until Friday, Feb. 19, according to state police. Troopers called the Department of Children and Families, which took the child into custody. She is now staying with her father in New York.

Troopers returned to the home on Monday, found Kasseris and arrested her.  She's being held on $25,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on March 15.
