Church Break-Ins Continue

Police said the suspect may have hidden out inside a West Hartford church.

West Hartford police are investigating a new round of break-ins at churches in town.

Officers were called to the Universalist Church on Fern Street for a report of a break-in around 6 p.m. Sunday. Money was taken from the church Sunday night, according to police.

Investigators returned to the Universalist Church Monday morning after church employees reported more damage to the building. There was no sign of forced entry, leading police to believe the suspect may have hidden out in the church after the first break-in.

It was not the only church targeted in the past few days. Money was stolen from the Angels on Assignment Church on Boulevard Saturday, and the St. James Episcopal Church was broken into Thursday night, according to authorities.

There have been a series of break-ins at churches in the area over the past few weeks.

Police found no sign of forced entry to Rocky Hill Congregational Church Jan. 23, but there was extensive damage to the office area of the building, police said.

There was a break-in at United Methodist Church in Wethersfield Jan. 22. Police tracked the suspect on foot, east from the church through the woods, then out to Prospect near Maple, but the track ended there.

Police said someone broke into the Berlin Congregational Church Jan. 18. The suspect to nothing but an empty cash box.

Several police departments in the greater Hartford area are working together on the crimes.
