Construction crews were installing in a water main on Skiff Street in Hamden when they struck a 1-inch gas line at 7:20 a.m., officials said.

It is taking emergency crews longer that expected to cap the leak because the main is an old steel line.

The condos on Skiff Street were evacuated because residents could smell the gas.
