Conn. Democrats Continue Push for Gun Control Legislation

Connecticut senators and US representatives held a press conference Friday afternoon to announce they will not end their fight on gun control legislation.

Lined with gun control supporters like the Newtown Alliance and Mothers Demand Action, Connecticut representatives shared their views after one of the busiest weeks fighting for gun control legislation.

Last week Senator Chris Murphy held a 15-hour filibuster to spark a vote on expanding FBI background checks on gun purchasers. The policy failed when it came to a vote.

Thursday, democrats held a 25 hour sit-in on the house floor and had no successes spurring a vote.

Republicans criticized the sit-in calling it a “publicity stunt.”

"To say this was a stunt. What do you call blocking and not allowing legislation to come forward in the face of such a catastrophe? In what everyone has to recognize an epidemic,” said U.S. Representative John Larson.

"There has been a tectonic shift in the American political landscape. You can almost feel the ground moving," said Senator Richard Blumenthal.

Local pro-gun groups have shared their opposition to the policies for stricter gun laws.

Officials did not reveal their next plans going forward when the house reopens in July.
