Connecticut Naval Attack Submarine Returning After Deployment

A U.S. Navy attack submarine is returning to its base in Connecticut from a deployment that saw it steam more than 36,000 nautical miles.

USS New Mexico is expected back at Naval Submarine Base New London on Friday.

The submarine stopped at ports in Norway, Spain and Scotland as it conducted operations in the U.S. military's European command area of responsibility.

The submarine was commissioned in 2010 as the sixth in the Virginia class of attack submarines. It is 377 feet long and is designed to carry out missions including anti-submarine warfare, delivery of special operations forces and intelligence gathering.

Attack submarines typically deploy for six months at a time.
