The deputy chief of the embattled East Haven police force said one of four officers charged with violating the civil rights of Latinos has applied to retire on disability.

Deputy Police Chief John Mannion told the New Haven Register that Officer David Cari has applied for retirement.

Cari, Dennis Spaulding, Jason Zullo and Sgt. John Miller were charged with conspiracy against rights, deprivation of rights and obstruction for allegedly executing unreasonable searches and seizures, using unreasonable force and concealing their actions.

The newspaper reports that Cari hasn't been on the force long enough to qualify for regular retirement, but is eligible for disability retirement. It's not clear what kind of disability he is claiming.

Mannion also said the department has begun internal affairs investigations against all four officers, who were arrested on Jan. 24 on allegations of harassment against Latinos including beatings and false arrests.

The officers have pleaded not guilty.

Police Chief Leonard Gallo is retiring on Friday, amid calls for his firing.
