Cops: Man Shoots Himself While Biking, Blames Gang

Stratford police said they arrested a man who reported being shot by gang members when he actually had wounded himself by accident while riding his bicycle.

Authorities told the Connecticut Post that Wendell Docteur, 22, claimed gang members shot him in the leg during a robbery in May, but there were inconsistencies in Docteur's story.

He later admitted he was riding his bicycle with a gun in his waistband when it fired by accident, police said.

Stratford police charged him on Thursday with making a false statement, unlawful discharge of a firearm and failure to report a lost firearm.

Docteur posted $10,000 bail and will be arraigned Sept. 5 in Bridgeport Superior Court.

He didn't return messages to the Associated Press seeking comment and it's not clear if he has a lawyer.
