Truck Nearly Flips Over Hartford Flyover

Parts of Interstates 91 and 84 were shut down Saturday morning after a tractor-trailer crashed and nearly flipped over the guardrail of the Hartford flyover.

The tandem tractor-trailer was traveling on the I-84 east ramp to I-91 north around 8:45 a.m. when ithit two light poles and tipped over, coming to rest on the guardrail, police said.

The light poles crashed down onto I-91 north, closing the northbound lanes. State police said the tandem trailer units were in danger of toppling over the guardrail down to I-91 southbound, which passes underneath the flyover.

The accident closed part of I-91 north and the I-84 east ramp while crews stabilized the truck and removed the damaged light poles.

Police were able to reopen the highway around 9:30 a.m.

The crash caused heavy delays on a morning when Hartford was packed with traffic for the Hartford Marathon and the noon kickoff for the UConn football game at Rentschler Field in East Hartford.
