Crash Kills Well-Known Sports Columnist

Dave Solomon was returning from covering the UConn football team when the crash occurred.

Long-time New Haven Register sports columnist Dave Solomon was killed in a car crash on Interstate-91 on Saturday night.

The crash happened around 7 p.m. on the southbound side of the highway in Middletown, State Police said.

Solomon, 59, was returning from covering the UConn football team's practice, according to the Register.

"All of us at the Register are reeling from this tragic news," New Haven Register Editor Jack Kramer said, according to the paper. "In my opinion, there was nobody better at what he did than Dave. He knew sports, he knew people, he told great stories."

Solomon worked at the paper for 35 years, and his "I Was Thinking" column appeared in the paper every Sunday for more than a decade, according to the Register. His final column appeared in Sunday's New Haven Register at the request of his wife, the paper reported.

State police said no other cars were involved in the crash.
