Cops: 3 Teens, 14, Steal, Crash Car

Two 14-year-old boys and a teenage girl are in the hospital after crashing a car police said they stole in Simsbury early Wednesday morning.

A homeowner called police after chasing two people from his front porch on Hopmeadow Street near Drake Hill Road, police said.

The car stopped on East Weatogue Street, police said, and the teens, who are all eighth graders, sped off when a police officer approached the car.

They hit a utility pole at Route 185 and East Weatogue Street around 3:30 a.m., police said.

Emergency crews removed two of the teens from the car right away, but it took almost two hours to pull the third person from the car.

Downed power lines started to burn a pole, creating a hazard and halting the extrication, Patrick Tourville, assistant chief of the Simsbury Fire Department, said.

Connecticut Light and Power shut off the power so crews could get to the person inside the car.

The person who was pulled from the car was taken by LifeStar to Hartford Hospital but none of the teens’ injuries appear to be life-threatening, officials said.

Investigators are at the scene Wednesday morning and drivers are advised to avoid the area. The driver could face charges, police said.
