Police Identify Driver Killed in Crash on I-91 in Meriden

One person died following a crash on I-91 in Meriden Friday afternoon.

The victim has been identified as Thomas Diaz, 54, of New Haven.

Three vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened near exit 16 just before 4 p.m.

According to police, Diaz was driving a Mitsubishi Galant E in the right lane on I-91 south, then traveled across the highway, striking a Chevy Express G2500 traveling in the left lane. Diaz’s vehicle then went across the median into the northbound lanes and collided with a Ford F350 driving in the left lane of northbound traffic.

Diaz was ejected from his car during the accident. He transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries.

The occupants of the Chevrolet reported no injuries. The occupants of the Ford reported minor injuries but refused medical attention on scene.

Police said the highway going northbound was completely closed, while only the left lane going southbound was closed, but both directions have been reopened.

Some drivers told NBC Connecticut that they were stuck in their car for up to four hours.
