9 Familes Displaced After South Windsor Condo Building Fire

Nine families are displaced after a fire severely damaged a building at a condominium complex in South Windsor Saturday afternoon.

Firefighters said they were called to the scene at 949 Pleasant Valley Street around 3 p.m. There they found fire on the first floor of building 11 extending to the second floor.

Nearly 50 South Windsor firefighters and mutual aid crews from Manchester, Broad Brook, Ellington, Vernon and East Hartford all responded to battle the blaze. It took crews roughly one hour to contain the fire and an additional four to five hours of overhaul and put out hot spots.

Officials said one resident of a unit where the fire appears to have started was taken to the hospital, but the injuries are not life-threatening. Five firefighters were also injured while fighting the fire and two were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Neighbors rushed outside when they saw the smoke.

“The flames on this side were through the roof. It was so intense it was like standing in front of a fire place,” said Bill Stewart.

The building had 12 units and sustained severe damage. The Red Cross was called in to assist the residents. In total, 15 adults and 8 children were displaced.

The fire department has received numerous calls asking how to help the residents. The department is working with the Red Cross and Condo Association to coordinate assistance.

The South Windsor Fire Marshal is investigating the cause.
