Retired Hamden Fire Lieutenant Reported Neighbor's Home on Fire

A retired Hamden fire lieutenant reported a fully involved garage fire on his neighbor's property on Monday.

Crews arrived to battle the fire on Garvin Road around 12:54 p.m. said there was heavy fire in the attic above the garage and home.

Firefighters quickly determined that no one was inside the home.

Gusting winds contributed to the fire spread in the attic and a section of the roof collapsed at 1:24 p.m. Crews were ordered out of the house for a brief period of time and the fire was declared under control at 1:38 p.m.

Aside from one firefighter sustaining a minor burn, no other injuries were reported.

Two people who reside at the home have been displaced and the American Red Cross is assisting them.

Hamden fire marshal Brian Dolan determined the fire was accidental. The homeowner was working in his garage and gasoline vapor caused a portable propane heater to ignite, officials said.

The homeowner tried to extinguish the fire but flames spread up the walls and into the attic.
