Crews Put Out Fire at Westport Home

A family was evacuated from their home Friday night after a wire caught fire outside of their home in Westport, according to Westport Assistant Fire Chief Brian Meadows.

Firefighters responded to at about 8:54 p.m. to an initial report of a smoldering wire on the outside of a house, Meadows said. As firefighters were on their way, the homeowner called back and said fire was visible, prompting more crews to respond. The homeowner had smelled something burning outside of of the house before noticing the smoke in the first place, fire officials said.

The fire may have been coming from the outside light above the garage.

The homeowner was told to get the whole family out of the house and wait for fire units outside, Meadows said.

By the time firefighters arrived, they observed the outside of the house above the garage was on fire.

Crews put out the flames, which burned through a wall.

Firefighters checked to see the blaze didn't spread further and searched the house to make sure everyone had indeed made it out safely. Fairfield firefighters responded for mutual aid and Norwalk firefighters covered the Westport fire headquarters in case any other fire calls came in.

Crews cleared the scene at about 10:56 p.m.
