Cromwell Police Arrest Man in Shooting Incident

A Cromwell man has been arrested on assault charges after a shooting early Saturday morning.

Cromwell police say around 12:25 a.m. the Middletown Police Department informed them a gunshot victim at the Middlesex Hospital Emergency Department reported being shot in Cromwell. The victim, who was shot in the left forearm, was treated and released from the hospital. He has not been publicly identified.

Cromwell officers located the crime scene at the Fox Glenn apartment complex at 123 West Street, at apartment #414. Officers entered the residence to ensure there were no other victims and searched the apartment. No one was located and police determined there was no immediate risk to the public.

The Cromwell police Detective Division and members of the Midstate Major Crime Squad responded to investigate. The suspect was identified as James Simmons, 29, of Cromwell. Simmons turned himself in to police. He is charged with first-degree assault, unlawful discharge of a firearm, reckless endangerment and disorderly conduct. He is currently held on a $50,000 bond.

Police are still investigating what led up to the shooting.
