A popular Hartford mainstay has moved out of the city.
D&D Market, purveyor of custom meats and all foods Italian, on Franklin Avenue was last open Saturday. Signs on the door direct customers to the Wethersfield location, which opened in 2014.
Patrons said it’s a sign of how much the neighborhood as changed.
“He is gonna lose a lot of clientele from the Hartford area but he gained from Wethersfield. That's my feeling on it. But to close this landmark? If I was the owner I would have never closed it,” said Giuseppe Marotta of Hartford.
In 1932 D&D opened on Windsor Street in Hartford. Amid urban renewal there it moved to the Franklin Avenue location.
“I used to live in Hartford on Wethersfield Avenue and I've been coming here for 30 years,” said Steve Reade, who now lives in Florida.
Shoppers said they came to D&D for food they couldn't find elsewhere.

“They want pork chops and pickled peppers. I live in Ellington. I go to South Windsor, Ellington, all of them I can't get pickled peppers. I know I can get pickled peppers here. I'm coming down here and they're closed!” said Jack Giordano from Ellington.
The owner of the market was not available to comment further. The Wethersfield store is located at 675 Wolcott Hill Road.
