Connecticut State Police were out in force over the Labor Day weekend dealing with unsafe drivers.
From Friday through Monday, state police ticketed 1,570 drivers for speeding on Connecticut highways. Another 2,820 were cited for hazardous violations such as talking on a cell phone, following too closely or an unsafe lane change. Troopers also charged 63 drivers with DUI.
There were 233 accidents on state roads during the holiday weekend, including two fatalities on highways. In addition to those deadly crashes, a motorcyclist, Shawn Watson, 25, of West Haven, was killed Sunday in an accident in North Haven.
The stepped-up enforcement by state police comes in the wake of the death of Trooper Kenneth Hall. He was killed Thursday during a traffic stop on I-91 in Enfield when a pickup truck slammed into his cruiser parked on the side of the highway.
State Police said they would continue the increased highway patrols through Monday.
