The end is coming for the Connecticut Defenders. The team is moving south to Virginia.

The Connecticut Defenders can drop the Connecticut from their name. They’re moving to Virginia.

The minor league baseball team will move from Norwich, Conn., to Virginia's capital, where they will begin playing during the 2010 season

The Richmond Metropolitan Authority and the league announced the move Wednesday.

The Defenders are a Class AA affiliate of the San Francisco Giants and played at Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium. There are efforts to move a lower-level Class A minor league baseball team to Norwich, the Day of New London reports.

Officials who are involved in the proposal could not comment on specifics, but sources told the Day that at least two teams from the New York-Penn League – the Vermont Lake Monsters and the Jamestown Jammers – are interested in moving here.
