Dogs Found Apparently Abandoned in Cage in Hartford

Hartford police were called to the area of East Elliot Street and Ledyard Street after two passersby found two dogs apparently abandoned in a cage.

Gilbert Rivera and Calvin Mann told NBC Connecticut they were walking home from work around 9 a.m. when they discovered the pups shoved behind some bushes.

"Cage was tipped over. No food, no water. The dogs clearly look like they haven't been fed," Mann said.

The pair said the dogs were shivering and covered with feces. They called police, then gave the dogs water and placed them in the sun to warm them up.

Rivera and Mann said they don’t understand how someone could leave two helpless animals.

"People say that dogs are like your kids so to do that to a dog especially the dog that small there's no excuse for it," Rivera said.

Hartford Animal Control said the dogs were taken to a veterinarian to get checked out and are expected to be okay.

Hartford police are investigating. Anyone with information can contact police at (860) 757-4000.
