Drunken Driver Drove Wrong Way on Route 8 for 12 Miles: Police

State police have arrested a Shelton man accused of driving the wrong way on Route 8 in Shelton for 12 miles early Tuesday morning.

Police received several 911 calls just before 1 a.m. about a driver in a silver Honda CRV going south in the northbound lanes and identified the driver as Walter Ciepeila, 64, of Shelton

He almost hit a state trooper who was trying to stop him, state police said.

Troopers set out stop sticks to stop Ciepeila, but he avoided them initially. A set did hit both tires on the driver’s side, but he continued going.

When police stopped him, Ciepeila’s eyes were bloodshot and glossy, his speech was slurred and he failed a field sobriety test, according to state police.

Ciepeila was charged with first-degree reckless endangerment, assaulting public safety personnel, driving the wrong way on a divided highway, possession of less than half an ounce of marijuana, operating a motor vehicle with a refused, suspended or revoked license and more.

Bond was set at $50,000 and Ciepeila is due in Bridgeport Superior Court today.
