Earl Takes It Easy On Connecticut

A weakening Hurricane Earl made its way up the East Coast and towards New England and was downgraded to the tropical storm by late Friday night..
Earl had been predicted to move to the East of Nantucket with winds near 80 miles per hour.
Connecticut was mostly spared from the worst of Earl. Moderate bands of rain moved into the Eastern part of the state just before noon Friday, but the storm's winds did not cause any widespread damage.
A tree fell across railroad tracks in New London, forcing Amtrak to suspend service between Boston and New York, and ferry service was suspended from New London to Orient Point, New York, but the storm didn't cause any other major transportation issues.
Some watched the skies to see just what Earl had in store. "Today we're having the rain coming in and it's hard to tell what's going to happen," Sound Runner store manager Chris Kopcha said.
No matter what the storm brought, authorities wanted to be prepared. "Our job of course is to be ready so if I have lost of police officers and lots of firemen sitting around and we don't wind up going to any emergencies, that's actually a good day in public safety," Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael Spera said.
Earl was expected to move away from Connecticut by late Friday night, clearing the way for a nice Labor Day weekend.
