Police are investigating after a car drove straight through an intersection in Wolcott this afternoon, crashing into a tree and killing the driver on impact, authorities said.

According to police, Joseph Salis, 84, was traveling from Long Swamp Road onto Wolcott Road when he apparently suffered a medical condition and sped straight through the intersection, traveling up the curb and into a residential yard, where he struck a tree.

The crash happened around 1:30 p.m. and the driver was declared dead at the scene. He has not been publicly identified.

A regional accident reconstruction team, comprising crews from Naugatuck, Watertown and Wolcott, is investigating.

The medical examiner is working to determine the official cause of death.
