Evacuations Over After After Gas Main Break at ECSU

Part of Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic and some nearby homes were evacuated after a contractor working for the school hit a line around 11:30 a.m. as they were putting in light poles.

Crews from the Willimantic fire department, police department, ECSU police and Yankee Gas responded.

Gas has been is shut off to the site, located at Prospect and Windham streets, and Yankee Gas crews are working to repair the break in the line.

Several buildings were evacuated as a precaution, including three ECSU dorms, one building not used during summer and the Office Community Engagement, located at 333 Prospect St., and three homes evacuated. The evacuations are now over.

Officials said the gas dissipated quickly and there was little danger. No injuries have been reported.
