4 Hospitalized in Old Saybrook Factory Fire

4 Employees taken to the hospital.

Four people were sent to the hospital after fire broke out inside a metal manufacturing plant in Old Saybrook on Thursday evening.

Fire in machinery at Sound Manufacturing at 51 Donnelly Road emitted gases and chemicals, according to fire officials.

Four employees were inside the plant when a laser set fire. The employees were able to extinguish the fire, but the workers were exposed to the chemicals. All four were decontaminated and taken to Middlesex Hospital for evaluation.

Six firefighters were also decontaminated at the scene for precautionary reasons, Chief Michael Spera, of the Emergency Management Director of Old Saybrook, said.

The decontamination process includes disrobing and then going through a wash and a rinse.

The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection responded to the scene as well and are analyzing the facility.

They credit the quick-thinking employees for keeping the fire contained.

"Everything they did was right on the money in terms of their actions. They shut off the machines, extinguished the fire and evacuated the area," said Jeff Chandler, of the DEEP Emergency Response Team.

Sound Manufacturing works in sheet metal fabrication and design, according to the company's website.
